Course Report

Red Ledges was Jack Nicklaus’s 200th solo design, highlighting its significance in the Nicklaus portfolio and earning recognition for its world-class mountain golf experience.

About

Red Ledges Golf Club is an 18-hole private course in Heber City, Utah, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2009. The course winds through red rock cliffs and juniper forests, offering sweeping views of the Wasatch Mountains, varied elevation changes, and a challenging yet playable layout that showcases Nicklaus’s signature style against stunning mountain scenery.

Caddie Tip

Pay close attention to elevation changes—the altitude and topography can add or subtract significant yardage. On many approach shots, including challenging par 3s, trust your yardage but factor in wind direction, as it swirls in the valleys. Greens are firm and fast, so favor the lower side to avoid tough recovery chips.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect is the combination of length (over 7,600 yards), elevation changes, and the ever-present wind. Many approach shots require both precision and creativity, as greens are well-defended by bunkers and false edges, and recovery options may be limited by natural red rock outcroppings.

The Good

Golfers rave about the variety and beauty of the holes, each uniquely blending into the Rocky Mountain landscape. The combination of dramatic elevation changes, panoramic mountain backdrops, and brilliantly maintained playing surfaces creates a memorable and enjoyable experience for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

The course’s dramatic topography, while visually stunning, can make it difficult to walk, limiting accessibility for those who prefer or require walking. Some also mention a tough pace when conditions are busy, especially with less experienced players tackling the challenging setup.
