Course Report

Great Waters hosted the Anderson Consulting World Championship of Golf from 1995 to 1997 and half its holes play directly alongside Lake Oconee.

About

Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course offering 18 holes along the scenic Lake Oconee shoreline. Originally opened in 1992 and restored in 2019, the layout is visually spectacular, blends lakeside play and inland holes, and showcases strategic design, bold bunkering, and superb playing conditions.

Caddie Tip

Bring plenty of balls, especially for the back nine with water in play on many holes. On the signature par-3 14th, club up if the wind is off the lake and aim for the middle of the green. Distance control on fast, undulating Bermuda greens is crucial throughout the round.

The Main Challenge

The back nine presents a formidable challenge, with holes routed along the lake exposing golfers to swirling winds, forced carries over water, and daunting approaches. Greens are fast and contoured, and the bunkering is deep and strategic, demanding precision from tee to green.

The Good

Golfers rave about the spectacular scenery, with memorable lakefront holes and dramatic elevation changes. The restoration in 2019 improved playing conditions substantially, especially greens and bunkers. The memorable layout, especially the closing stretch, leaves lasting impressions for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some players find the pace of play to lag during peak seasons and note ball loss due to numerous water hazards on the back nine. Playability can be a concern for high handicappers, and lake winds present added difficulty that not all golfers enjoy.
