Course Report
The National Course consists of three nines—Ridge, Bluff, and Cove—offering 27 possible holes, but the original Ridge and Bluff loops remain the preferred 18-hole routing among regulars and critics.
About
The National Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee is a Tom Fazio-designed layout that opened in 1997 and features three distinct nines. The premier configuration, Ridge and Bluff, flows through rolling terrain, hardwood forests, and offers challenging play with strategic bunkering, doglegs, and some lakeside holes. A recent 2014 renovation enhanced playability and conditioning, maintaining its reputation as a standout resort golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Precision is critical on the approach shots as Fazio’s bunkering and tiered greens can create tricky up-and-downs. On Ridge 6 and 8, favor the safe side off the tee as aggressive lines bring hazards into play. Pay careful attention to subtle breaks on the greens, especially on the lower holes near the water.
The Main Challenge
The toughest part of the course is managing the multi-tiered greens and strategic bunkering, particularly on the par 4s and long par 3s of the Bluff nine. Errant shots are often penalized by water, thick woods, or tightly-mown collection areas, making course management and precision crucial for scoring well.
The Good
Golfers rave about the variety and strategy found throughout the National’s Ridge and Bluff nines. The diverse routing, memorable par 3s, and clever use of the rolling Georgia landscape deliver plenty of memorable moments, while the overall ambiance of the Lake Oconee property elevates the experience beyond the course itself.
The Not So Good
Many golfers wish for improved pace of play during peak resort periods, as slower rounds can result from heavy guest volume. A few also suggest additional views of Lake Oconee on more holes, since the course is mostly routed through wooded terrain with only limited lakeside exposure.
Signature Hole:
#
7
The par 3 7th on the Bluff nine is a 213-yard hole flanked by a creek, demanding a precise long-iron tee shot to a green protected by bunkers and water. Its natural setting, challenging distance, and risk-reward approach make it one of the National’s most memorable holes.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse includes a grill and dining area with lake views, locker rooms, a well-stocked pro shop, and comfortable lounges. Resort guests have access to additional amenities such as spas, fine dining, and fitness centers at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
Practice Facilities
The course features a driving range, putting and chipping greens, and short-game practice areas. PGA instruction is available, as well as access to The Kingdom at Reynolds Lake Oconee for advanced club fitting and coaching, widely regarded as a premier teaching facility.
