Course Report

Rhode Island Country Club is home to the CVS Charity Classic, a prominent pro-am event that regularly draws PGA Tour professionals and celebrities to its historic grounds.

About

Rhode Island Country Club is a private 18-hole Donald Ross design opened in 1911, blending parkland, wooded, and several seaside holes along Narragansett Bay. Known for its exceptional layout and scenic closing stretch, the course has hosted multiple USGA championships and is recognized as one of New England's top classic golf venues.

Caddie Tip

Pay attention to the wind direction, especially on the finishing holes along Narragansett Bay. Approach shots into the greens require precise distance control; take extra care to avoid the tricky greenside bunkers on the back nine, where up-and-downs can be demanding. Favor the center of most greens unless your yardage is perfect.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect is managing the wind and shot selection on the final four holes, particularly the par-3 16th and long par-4 17th, where the Bay borders play and swirling gusts test nerves and distance judgment.

The Good

Golfers especially love the closing holes, which run along Narragansett Bay and provide scenic vistas and a memorable, challenging finish. The Donald Ross architecture offers strategic interest for all skill levels, and conditioning is regarded as among the best in the state.

The Not So Good

Non-members occasionally report limited tee time availability due to club events and heavy member play, and the coastal wind can make consistency difficult even on otherwise calm days. Some holes away from the Bay are more ordinary by comparison.
