Course Report
The course’s clubhouse features a cozy bar known locally as the “10th hole,” a favorite hangout spot for post-round relaxation and local gatherings.
About
Rocky Knolls Golf Course, established in 1965, is a scenic 9-hole public parkland course set in the Black Hills of South Dakota just outside Custer, known for its beautiful views, fun design, and friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The course offers quality conditions and good value for locals and visitors.
Caddie Tip
Keep your drives in play—elevation changes and tree-lined fairways can make missing the fairway costly. Approach shots tend to play slightly shorter due to elevation. The greens are smaller but roll true, so trust your line.
The Main Challenge
Rocky Knolls’ primary challenge comes from its tree-lined, undulating terrain. Several holes require precise tee shots with out-of-bounds trouble lurking and small greens that reward accurate approaches. The changing elevation puts extra demand on club selection and judgment.
The Good
Golfers especially love the scenic setting, with pine-forested hills, wildlife, and elevated tee shots making every round memorable. The friendly staff and relaxed vibe, together with outstanding value for money, bring repeat play from locals and visitors alike.
The Not So Good
Occasional criticism focuses on slow play during peak community events and aerated greens early in the season. Some holes may feel tight off the tee for high handicappers. Improvement of practice facilities would enhance the overall experience.
Signature Hole:
#
9
The 9th hole, a par 4, offers a picturesque finish framed by the Black Hills pines and rolling hills. With challenges from the tee and a contoured green, it provides players a memorable closing test while enjoying views of the surrounding landscape.
