Course Report

Stone Canyon is the only course in the Tucson area ever ranked in Golf Digest’s Top 100 in America.

About

Stone Canyon Club is a private, Top 100-ranked course designed by Jay Morrish, nestled against the Tortolita Mountains in Oro Valley, Arizona. Carved through dramatic desert canyons and boulders, it features lush Bermuda fairways, ample teeing options, and challenging greens. The setting provides breathtaking mountain and saguaro views, offering a world-class desert golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively off the tee—landing zones are generous but positioning is crucial, especially around the strategically-placed bunkers and natural desert hazards. Take time to read the complex Bermuda greens, as subtle breaks and speed can quickly turn two-putts into three.

The Main Challenge

Stone Canyon’s routing through rocky desert canyons puts a premium on accuracy and course management. Its long par 4s and forced carries over native areas require confident ball-striking, while the undulating Bermuda greens demand touch and precise speed control. The elevation changes amplify the challenge, especially when wind comes into play.

The Good

Golfers rave about Stone Canyon’s unique blend of dramatic desert scenery and excellent course conditioning. The striking boulder formations, towering saguaros, and panoramic mountain vistas make every hole visually memorable. The course layout rewards strategic play and offers ample challenge, particularly with its risk-reward options and fairway contouring.

The Not So Good

Some members note that the course can play slow during peak times, with extended rounds due to the challenging terrain and difficult approach shots. Additionally, the desert setting means lost balls are common in thick brush and among rocks, which can frustrate less accurate players.

Signature Hole:

#

18

The 18th is a stunning par 4, playing 503 yards from the back tee, with an elevated tee shot against a mountain backdrop. The fairway, framed by rock and cactus outcroppings, requires precise placement due to a split fairway. A large green-side bunker and native landscape create a memorable and demanding finish to the round.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features upscale locker rooms, a modern restaurant and bar, spacious lounge areas, a pro shop, and an impressive health and fitness center. Members enjoy year-round social and golf events, with attentive service supporting an exclusive private club atmosphere.
