About

Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf were the first Americans to design a golf course in Scotland, collaborating on Loch Lomond, which is frequently regarded as their best work.

Jay Morrish (1936–2015) was a transformative American golf course architect whose thoughtful approach and technical expertise left a lasting legacy in modern design. Born in Grand Junction, Colorado, Morrish earned degrees in landscape architecture and turf management from Colorado State University, later teaching horticulture before launching his design career.

Morrish apprenticed with Robert Trent Jones SR., then worked alongside George Fazio and eventually spent a decade as a senior designer with Jack Nicklaus, helping shape many Golden Bear courses of the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1983, he launched his own practice and partnered with PGA Tour pro Tom Weiskopf, creating celebrated courses such as Troon North, TPC Scottsdale, Forest Highlands, and the acclaimed Loch Lomond in Scotland—the first major American-designed course in the country.

Morrish’s work is known for blending strategic design with the natural landscape, and with Weiskopf, he popularized “reachable” par fours and dramatic risk-reward options. After the partnership, Morrish continued designing, often with his son Carter, leaving his mark on dozens of top-ranked courses in the American West and beyond.

A former president of the ASGCA, Morrish is remembered as a craftsman whose designs invite thought and enjoyment for golfers of all levels.
