Course Report

Pine Canyon includes a unique 19th hole, a short par 3 called 'Double or Nothing,' designed specifically to help golfers settle their bets after 18, featuring an island green beside the clubhouse.

About

Pine Canyon Club, designed by Jay Morrish in 2004, is a private, 18-hole mountain course set in the pines of Flagstaff beneath the San Francisco Peaks. At 7,272 yards from the back tees, the course features dramatic elevation changes, rolling fairways, multiple lakes and ponds, and views of Humphreys Peak. Known for its pristine conditions and exclusive, family-friendly atmosphere, Pine Canyon delivers a memorable alpine golf experience anchored by thoughtful design and outstanding amenities.

Caddie Tip

Pay close attention to elevation changes and wind, especially on the par 3s—club selection can vary significantly. The greens are quick and heavily contoured; favor the low side, as putting above the hole can lead to challenging recoveries. Take note of the mountain’s influence on breaks, especially as many subtle slopes move toward the San Francisco Peaks.

The Main Challenge

Elevation changes, swift and contoured greens, and the strategic placement of water hazards make Pine Canyon a test of both skill and course management. The fast greens reward precise approach play, while the fairways demand accurate drives to avoid tree lines and bunkers. The mountain air can subtly affect ball flight, especially under swirling winds.

The Good

Golfers especially love Pine Canyon’s spectacular scenery, classic Jay Morrish routing, and comfortable mountain climate. The course’s variety—elevated tees, challenging par 3s, and risk-reward par 5s—make every round feel fresh. Its manicured conditions, wide corridors, and remarkable tranquility offer an escape from Arizona’s heat and bustle, making the overall golf experience especially memorable.

The Not So Good

Pine Canyon’s exclusivity means limited tee access and has made it difficult for guests to experience the layout without membership. Some golfers have noted that while the scenery is superb, the challenge can be inconsistent across nines, and the course favors the long hitter, especially from the back tees. Drainage after heavy rainfall can occasionally affect certain fairways.
