Course Report

The 16th hole becomes 'The Coliseum' during the Phoenix Open, with grandstands holding 20,000+ fans, making it the loudest hole in golf. Tiger Woods famously made a hole-in-one here in 1997.

About

Opened in 1986 and designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course is a renowned public golf venue, home to the PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open. Known for its pristine conditions, dramatic spectator mounding, and challenging desert-inspired layout, it offers both playability for amateurs and a stern test for professionals.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively on desert-lined holes, especially on the back nine where water hazards and firm, fast greens punish aggressive misses. Keep approach shots below the hole and be mindful of swirling winds, especially approaching the par-5 15th and the signature 16th. Course knowledge and patience reward smart play.

The Main Challenge

The closing stretch—holes 15 through 18—offers the course’s toughest test, with water hazards, tight landing areas, and intense risk-reward decisions. The 17th features a drivable par 4 surrounded by water, while the 18th demands a precise drive with water running up the left. Nerves and shotmaking are required in equal measure.

The Good

Golfers love the chance to play a true PGA Tour venue kept in championship condition, with the thrill of walking in the footsteps of the world’s best players. The excitement of the back nine, especially the 16th through 18th stretch, lets every golfer imagine themselves under tournament pressure.

The Not So Good

Pace of play can be slow at peak times, with long rounds common during winter and spring. Some golfers note that replay value drops as the course can feel penal with frequent missed fairways punished by desert areas or water, which can frustrate higher handicappers.

Signature Hole:

#

16

The par-3 16th is the course’s iconic hole, famous for its arena-like grandstands during the WM Phoenix Open. Surrounded by thousands of raucous fans in tournament week, it demands precision to a mid-iron target with bunkers left and right. During everyday play, the amphitheater setting provides a glimpse of tournament magic for every golfer.
