Course Report

Royal Isabela was developed by former tennis star Charlie Pasarell and features a unique 'Fork in the Road' hole (No. 6) where players can choose between two fairways, emphasizing strategic decision-making.

About

Royal Isabela Golf Club, designed by Charlie and Stanley Pasarell with architect David Pfaff, sprawls dramatically across 426 coastal acres atop towering cliffs in northwestern Puerto Rico. With two distinctive nines—parkland and coastal links—this challenging layout blends natural sand dunes, ravines, and ocean vistas, delivering a championship test and immersive scenic journey.

Caddie Tip

Wind from the Atlantic is a constant factor; aim conservatively on exposed cliffside holes and favor the safe edges of greens. On holes 6 and 17, make strategic choices—6 allows you to pick your challenge, and 17 requires extra club into strong breezes. Bring plenty of balls, as errant shots quickly disappear in thick native vegetation and ravines.

The Main Challenge

Royal Isabela’s main challenge comes from the relentless wind off the Atlantic and native vegetation bordering fairways—shots that stray even slightly can disappear into ravines or thick rough. Cliffside holes require focus and bring constant elevation changes, while sloping greens reward precision and penalize carelessness throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers love the unmatched setting along 200-foot cliffs, ocean panoramas on nearly every hole, and a layout that feels adventurous yet harmonious with nature. The course delivers a dramatic, secluded golf experience with minimal housing intrusions, blending pure golf with inspiring views of the Atlantic and steep natural ravines.

The Not So Good

Some players feel the rough and native vegetation bordering fairways are severe, making lost balls common and slowing play. The extreme exposure to wind, while dramatic, can make the course downright brutal for higher handicaps. Green fees are also among the highest in Puerto Rico, limiting access for many.
