Course Report

Donald Ross, one of golf’s most renowned architects, made Little Compton his summer home and personally redesigned Sakonnet Golf Club over a period of two decades.

About

Sakonnet Golf Club, established in 1899 and designed by Donald Ross, sits on the southern tip of Little Compton, Rhode Island. Known for classic Ross architecture, bentgrass greens, and fairways, the layout features memorable sea views and stone walls across 18 holes, presenting a well-conditioned, strategic challenge for all levels.

Caddie Tip

The prevailing ocean breezes can change direction and strength quickly—factor them into club selection on every approach. Many greens slope subtly away from the fairway, so aim below the hole for easier putts. Position off the tee is key on shorter par 4s to leave the best angles into small greens.

The Main Challenge

Players are tested by small, undulating greens and strategic bunkering typical of Donald Ross layouts. Constant winds off the ocean mean club selection is critical, especially on exposed holes. Stone walls and natural contours present additional strategic considerations, rewarding thoughtful shotmaking throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers especially enjoy the classic Ross design enhanced by refreshing coastal views and the tranquil setting. Strategic routing across undulating ground, framed by old stone walls and glimpses of the ocean, creates an experience that feels both historic and scenic, with inviting playing conditions encouraging walking.

The Not So Good

Some players mention the shorter overall length and low par (70) can make it less challenging for long hitters, and windy coastal conditions may sometimes add unpredictable difficulty. Limited public access also restricts wider appreciation of Ross’s work for non-members.
