Course Report
San Lorenzo is home to over 70 species of birds, including rare herons and storks, making it a haven for birdwatchers as well as golfers.
About
San Lorenzo Golf Course, designed by Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore in 1988, is situated in Quinta do Lago and regarded as one of Algarve's most beautiful and entertaining layouts. The course features undulating pine woodland, saltwater lagoons, and challenging holes that wind through the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, renowned for excellent maintenance and spectacular seaside scenery.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee on several dogleg holes, as the fairways often pinch around water hazards and pine groves. On the signature par 3 7th, take one extra club to compensate for coastal breezes and avoid missing short left, where marsh awaits. Lower shots tend to work best on the inward holes exposed to wind.
The Main Challenge
San Lorenzo's main test comes from its strategically placed water hazards, especially on the back nine, and tight fairways that thread through pine forests and wetlands. Wind off the Atlantic can turn otherwise routine holes into formidable challenges, while the closing stretch is particularly demanding under pressure.
The Good
Golfers especially praise the stunning scenery, with saltwater marshes, pine-lined fairways, and sweeping Atlantic ocean views on multiple holes. The natural setting within the Ria Formosa Reserve creates a peaceful, secluded feel and outstanding wildlife, which greatly enhances the round.
The Not So Good
While course conditioning is generally strong, some golfers report minor issues with occasionally patchy tee boxes and rough areas away from the main playing corridors. Bunker consistency and pace of play during peak afternoons can also vary, suggesting potential for further enhancements in these areas.
Signature Hole:
#
7
The 7th hole, a breathtaking par 3, is set along the edge of the Ria Formosa estuary and demands a precise tee shot across water to a well-bunkered green. Sweeping coastal views and natural marshes create one of the most notable vistas in Algarve golf, making it a visually stunning and nerve-testing highlight.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse provides changing rooms, a pro shop stocked with equipment, comfortable locker rooms, and a restaurant with views over the course. Post-round, golfers can enjoy a terrace area, bar, and various hospitality options, all reflecting the relaxed luxury of the Quinta do Lago resort.
Practice Facilities
San Lorenzo offers a comprehensive practice area including a driving range, short game chipping area, putting green, and practice bunker. Golf equipment rentals, tuition with a PGA professional, and golf bag storage are also available for visiting players.
