Course Report
The 14th hole was designed based on the winning entry of a Golf Digest “Armchair Architect” challenge, making it one of the only major holes in the world conceptualized by an amateur.
About
Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley, designed by David McLay Kidd in 2018, sprawls across ancient sand barrens in central Wisconsin. The course is defined by wide fairways, enormous greens, dramatic elevation changes, and a playful design that rewards bold decision-making. Its vast scale and natural setting provide a uniquely memorable and enjoyable golf experience for players of all levels.
Caddie Tip
Aggression is rewarded at Mammoth Dunes, but the enormous greens conceal many slopes and tiers. Play aggressively off the tee, but study approach shots carefully—landing on the wrong section makes two-putting tough. On holes like 6 and 14, creativity and local knowledge can save several strokes.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge at Mammoth Dunes is deciphering the slopes and contours of its gigantic greens. While the wide fairways allow for aggressive drives, missing your line or finding the wrong green quadrant often leads to ever-difficult up-and-downs and long, complicated putts where a three-putt is common.
The Good
Golfers rave about the wide fairways and accessible greens, making every hole playable and fun for every skill level. The dynamic visuals of golden sand dunes, panoramic views, and the course’s creative routing make for an exhilarating, memorable round that’s frequently cited as one of the most enjoyable in the Midwest.
The Not So Good
Some guests note the firm conditions, while authentic, can be punishing, with balls running into deep waste areas or tough recovery zones. Others mention the scale of the course results in long green-to-tee walks, which can be tiring, especially for those not accustomed to walking large layouts.
Signature Hole:
#
14
The par 4 14th hole at Mammoth Dunes is a standout, originally conceived by a contest winner. With its risk-reward design, this short par 4 tempts golfers to drive the green over a massive sand ridge and bunkers, but misses can leave a tough recovery. Its dramatic visuals and bold strategy make it unforgettable.
Clubhouse
The resort clubhouse features a relaxed restaurant, pro shop, comfortable locker facilities, and scenic outdoor seating with panoramic golf course views. Guests can expect attentive service, overnight accommodations, and easy access to both golf and non-golf amenities, including dining and trails.
Practice Facilities
Full practice range with target greens, an expansive short game area, and a putting green mirror the size and contours found on the course. The complex serves both casual warm-ups and structured improvement, providing plenty of space for all visitors.
