Course Report
Shore Gate was Golfplan's first East Coast design and was built on 245 acres of former beach and dunes terrain, with 450,000 cubic yards of sand moved during construction.
About
Shore Gate Golf Club in Ocean View, designed by David Dale and Ron Fream, is a top-ranked New Jersey public course opened in 2002. Stretching to 7,227 yards, it features undulating fairways, strategic bunkering, and a mix of parkland and links-style holes bordered by seven lakes. Noted for challenging play and beautiful coastal woodlands, Shore Gate offers an inclusive experience with five sets of tees.
Caddie Tip
Favor precision over power off the tee and study pin positions closely on approach shots, as undulating greens and strategic bunkers protect many holes. Bringing extra balls is wise, especially when facing forced carries over the course's many ponds and fescue waste areas.
The Main Challenge
Shore Gate’s challenge centers on its intimidating bunkers, fescue-lined waste areas, and numerous forced carries over water. The inward nine 'Trilogy' stretch (holes 13–15) is particularly formidable, demanding accuracy and strategy. The undulating greens further penalize poorly placed approach shots.
The Good
Golfers love Shore Gate's blend of challenge and aesthetics—sprawling sandscapes and artfully designed bunkers deliver both visual excitement and strategic demand. The combination of parkland, coastal woods, and occasional links-feel creates memorable variety. The atmosphere is relaxed for a premier public course, and the feeling of isolation between holes adds to its allure.
The Not So Good
Some golfers express that the level of difficulty—especially from the back tees—can be punishing, while others note the pace of play may lag during peak times. Maintenance is generally strong but there are occasional complaints of slow greens following heavy rains and rough cart paths in certain sections.
