Course Report

Spirit Hollow's front nine winds through a residential area, while the back nine traverses untouched, rocky woodland with over 15,000 trees planted as a tribute to the owner's family.

About

Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa, designed by Rick Jacobsen, occupies a dramatic 400-acre site formerly a cattle ranch in the Mississippi River Valley. The course blends strategic shot options with varied elevation, mature oaks, rocky outcrops, and natural streams on eleven holes. With excellent bentgrass conditions and an engaging layout, it's consistently ranked among Iowa’s best.

Caddie Tip

Conservative tee shots are often rewarded, especially on holes with water or elevation changes. Stay below the hole on the undulating, fast bentgrass greens. Many holes offer risk-reward options, so play to your strengths and watch for swirling valley winds that can affect approach shots more than expected.

The Main Challenge

Spirit Hollow’s challenge lies in its continuous elevation changes and strategic use of natural hazards. Water comes into play on 11 holes, and the par 4s, in particular, demand careful placement off the tee. The undulating, fast greens offer another layer of difficulty, punishing poorly placed approaches or aggressive putting lines.

The Good

Golfers love the course's variety, with dramatic elevation changes, strategic holes that use every club, and beautifully maintained bentgrass greens. The setting away from traffic, rolling woodland and streams, as well as the friendly staff and on-site lodging, combine for a memorable and enjoyable experience for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some players note that repeated elevation changes can result in longer walks and a slower pace of play, especially during peak season. The front nine’s proximity to homes can detract from the otherwise rugged feel, and some wish for more on-course signage to assist first-time visitors.

Signature Hole:

#

Its natural beauty and strategic options make it memorable for both challenge and aesthetics.

Clubhouse
