Course Report

The North Course debuted at #98 on Golf Magazine's 2025/26 Top 100 Courses in the World list, just one year after opening, and shares ownership roots with the elite Tara Iti Golf Club.

About

Te Arai Links North Course, designed by renowned architect Tom Doak, opened in October 2023 as a public-access links masterpiece on New Zealand's pristine coastline. Featuring fescue fairways, dramatic inland dunes, and a thrilling oceanfront finish, it contrasts sharply with its sister South Course.

Caddie Tip

Favor aggressive lines off the tee on par-5s like the 11th, but beware massive right-side dunes. On inland holes, club up for wind-sheltered pines and use punchbowl greens like the 6th to funnel approaches. Return to coast cautiously—prioritize position over distance on closing holes to avoid punishing blowouts.

The Main Challenge

Inland dunes and pine forests demand precise positioning, with blind shots like the 13th par-4 over massive bunkers testing resolve. Stroke-index 1 fourth hole features a brutally contoured green Doak shaped himself, while wind amplifies strategic demands on reversible par-5s and punchbowls.

The Good

Golfers rave about the seamless blend of coastal drama and inland Pine Valley-esque dunes, with standout holes like the 11th par-5 and 13th par-4 offering strategic depth and pure shot-shaping joy. Tom Doak's unique green complexes and firm fescue turf create endless replay value in a breathtaking setting.

The Not So Good

As a young course, some fairway definition may firm up over time. Limited non-golf amenities compared to full resorts, and inland stretches lack full ocean views like the South Course. Pace can slow on peak weekends due to growing popularity among international visitors.
