Course Report

The course was designed by golf legend Johnny Miller as a way to give back to the Star Valley community that he frequented as a ranch owner and fisherman.

About

Star Valley View Golf Course is a Johnny Miller signature design in Afton, Wyoming, nestled at the foothills of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The 18-hole, par-70 course offers a compact yet scenic and walkable layout, featuring mountain views, water features, and intriguing par 3s. The facility provides practice greens and a 280-yard driving range—welcoming to golfers of all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

The course’s gently elevated fairways can deceive your club selection—take at least one more club on uphill approaches, especially when hitting toward mountain views. The greens are subtly contoured with water nearby on several holes, so be precise with your short game and cautious of run-offs around closely mown collars.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge is managing approach shots into greens guarded by water and subtle contours. The mountain setting introduces shifting afternoon breezes, making club selection critical. Tight fairways and mounds require strategy to avoid challenging lies, especially around water hazards and shrubby rough.

The Good

Golfers love the intimate, walkable design offering stunning 360-degree views of the Star Valley and bordering mountains. The course is accessible to all skill levels, with friendly staff and well-maintained fairways enhancing the welcoming community atmosphere.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for more extensive practice facilities, as the putting green and range can be limiting during peak play. Also, due to the compact layout, there are occasional pace-of-play slowdowns when it’s busy, as several tee boxes and greens are in close proximity.
