Course Report

Beyond golf, Sutton Bay is known for its 5,000 acres of hunting land and premier access to Missouri River fishing, making it a unique multi-sport private destination in South Dakota.

About

Sutton Bay Golf Club, located in central South Dakota on the bluffs of the Missouri River, is a private, destination club designed for world-class outdoor recreation. The course features a unique prairie links feel and was created by master golf architect Graham Marsh. Members and guests enjoy first-class golf, fishing, and hunting in a serene setting.

Caddie Tip

The exposed prairie and riverside location make wind a major factor, especially on longer par 3s like the seventh. Control trajectory and club selection in the wind, and favor conservative targets—to miss the deep bunkers means fewer big scores. Stay below the hole when pins are tucked.

The Main Challenge

Prevailing high winds and the open prairie landscape make accurate club selection critical, especially on long par 3s and exposed river bluff holes. Deep, strategically placed bunkers and demanding green complexes present a stern test for skilled players. The course is known for punishing wayward shots with tough recovery options.

The Good

Golfers rave about the extraordinary natural setting—rolling bluffs above the Missouri River with sweeping prairie vistas and minimal manmade intrusion. The service and hospitality are renowned, providing a feeling of exclusivity and peace rarely found in American golf. The routing takes advantage of prevailing winds and elevation shifts.

The Not So Good

Some visitors note the remote location requires significant travel and can present logistical challenges. Occasional drought conditions may impact fairway firmness and color. Infrequent slow play may occur during high season weekends, and the exclusivity can make access difficult for non-members.

7

The par 3 7th hole is a standout at Sutton Bay, stretching to 268 yards and demanding a strong, accurate tee shot to a green protected by three bunkers. The sloping, tiered green adds to the challenge, making par an excellent score. Its length and danger make it the club’s most memorable challenge.
