Course Report
The Bluffs is renowned for its hillside setting overlooking the Missouri River Valley, with elevation changes rare for eastern South Dakota courses.
About
The Bluffs Golf Course, designed by Mark Clark and Rusty Jensen in 1996, is an 18-hole public parkland layout set atop the Missouri River Bluffs. This well-rated destination offers strategic design, beautiful river valley views, and strong conditions, attracting golfers regionally for its challenge, scenery, and enjoyable experience.
Caddie Tip
Play for placement over brute distance, as the rolling terrain near the river bluff creates many uneven lies and strategic angles. The greens are subtly contoured—favor the safe side on approach shots, as missing in the wrong spot can lead to tricky recoveries, especially on a windy day.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect of The Bluffs is controlling ball flight amid the unpredictable prairie winds and navigating elevation changes not typical for the region. Doglegs and water hazards on the back nine force golfers to shape shots and strategize off the tee, especially on long par 4s.
The Good
Golfers love the panoramic views of the Missouri River Valley from several elevated tees and greens. The setting provides a memorable experience, with rolling fairways and natural features uncommon in the region, as well as occasional wildlife sightings.
The Not So Good
Some players report that rough and bunker consistency can be uneven in shoulder months. A few fairways have drainage issues after heavy rains, leading to occasional muddy patches, and the pace of play can slow during busy weekend times.
Signature Hole:
#
13
The signature 13th hole at The Bluffs Golf Course is a stunning par-4 featuring a tee shot from a high bluff onto a dogleg left fairway. With elevated greens and tall grass hazards guarding the approach, it challenges golfers with strategic shot placement while offering breathtaking views of the Missouri River valley.
Clubhouse
The full-service clubhouse offers a pro shop, casual dining with views of the course and river valley, locker rooms, and rentable event space. It provides a comfortable 19th hole for post-round relaxation.
Practice Facilities
The Bluffs provides a grass driving range, short game area, and putting green. Practice facilities are open to all guests, making it easy to warm up or sharpen your game before the round.
