Course Report

The Hills showcases large-scale modern art installations throughout the course, blending sculpture and golf in a unique and memorable environment.

About

The Hills Golf Club in Arrowtown, designed by John Darby, is New Zealand’s most exclusive championship course. Set on dramatic undulating terrain with exposed rocky outcroppings, it offers breathtaking alpine views and world-class conditions. Owned by Sir Michael Hill, the modern design incorporates artistic installations and strategic interest, regularly hosting the New Zealand Open.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy on approach shots is critical; many greens have subtle slopes and run-offs that can punish over-aggressive play. On the sixth hole, club up and aim for the center, as swirling winds off Dragonfly Lake can alter flight. Expect elevation changes and be mindful of native grass beyond fairways.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect of The Hills is managing the dramatic and frequent elevation changes, as approach shots often require precise distance control. Native grasses and strategic bunkering punish errant drives, and wind—especially around Dragonfly Lake—adds unpredictability to club selection throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the breathtaking Southern Alps scenery, dramatic elevation changes, and the myriad of modern art sculptures placed throughout the property. The blend of strategic challenge, aesthetic appeal, and exclusivity creates a truly memorable playing experience unique to New Zealand.

The Not So Good

Some members and guests feel the design does not always match the magnificence of the surrounding landscape. Occasional wind gusts and thick native grass beyond fairways can slow pace and make play challenging, and availability for non-members is highly restricted.

The par 4 sixth hole at The Hills requires a dramatic approach shot entirely over Dragonfly Lake to a well-protected green. Views of the Southern Alps provide a stunning backdrop, while the risk-reward design offers a thrilling challenge. This hole has become the centerpiece for both its strategy and natural beauty.

Clubhouse

The spacious, modern clubhouse features locally sourced cuisine, art galleries, pro shop, comfortable locker rooms, and panoramic alpine views from every angle. Wheelchair access and attentive service contribute to a world-class experience both on and off the course.

Practice Facilities

The Hills offers a two-tiered putting green, dedicated chipping and short-game area, and a full-length driving range with high-quality range balls included. Facilities are well-maintained and suited to warming up before a round or dedicated practice sessions.
