Course Report
The Cascades Course has hosted eight different USGA national championships, including the U.S. Women’s Open and Curtis Cup, making it one of the nation’s most notable historic tournament sites.
About
The Cascades Course at The Omni Homestead Resort, designed by William Flynn in 1923, is a classic mountain parkland course noted for its historic architecture and scenic setting in Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains. The layout features dramatic elevation changes and renowned Golden Age design, having hosted numerous USGA championships.
Caddie Tip
Approach shots require careful club selection due to frequent elevation changes. The greens tend to be fast and subtly contoured—aim for the center of the putting surfaces, especially on downhill approaches, and respect the mature rough, which can penalize wayward drives.
The Main Challenge
The elevated and sloping terrain creates demanding approach shots and challenging lies throughout. Thick rough and fast, firm greens reward accuracy and strong short game. The par-3s demand precise distance control, while the closing stretch punishes errant play, particularly for those grinding to post a score.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the mountain scenery, Golden Age design pedigree, and memorable holes—particularly on the back nine. The flow of the routing and the peaceful Allegheny setting make for a uniquely enjoyable round, especially in the shoulder seasons when colors and conditions stand out.
The Not So Good
Some golfers mention softer turf conditions and spotty drainage in wet periods, with occasional slow play due to resort guest traffic. A refresh of select bunkers and updates to the practice area are desired by frequent players.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole, a par 4, descends from an elevated tee flanked by mature trees, creating a picturesque finish. The approach shot plays slightly downhill to a heavily bunkered green set in front of the historic clubhouse. Strategic bunkering rewards accuracy off the tee and on the approach while offering memorable mountain views.
Clubhouse
The original clubhouse offers locker rooms, a pro shop, and relaxed dining with views of the finish. Resort amenities, including spa and lodging, are a major part of the appeal, offering comfort before and after the round.
Practice Facilities
Expect a full grass range, short game area, and a practice putting green adjacent to the first tee. While functional, the facilities are more modest than those at ultra-premium resorts, but sufficient for warmups and post-round practice.
