Course Report
The Powder Horn has been recognized by Golfweek as the No. 1 golf course in Wyoming and is surrounded by over 900 acres of scenic Rocky Mountain landscape.
About
The Powder Horn Golf Club in Sheridan, Wyoming is a 27-hole private facility nestled at the base of the Big Horn Mountains. Designed by Dick Bailey, the course features three distinct nines surrounded by natural beauty and mountain vistas. Known for its variety, pristine conditions, and community spirit, it is regularly ranked as one of Wyoming’s top courses.
Caddie Tip
Play for position off the tee, as elevation changes and mountain breezes can impact club selection more than you expect. Keep approaches below the hole—greens can be contoured and fast, so leaving uphill putts is vital to scoring well.
The Main Challenge
Elevation changes, water hazards, and frequent wind combine to create a demanding test, especially on approach shots. The speedy, well-contoured greens require confident putting and careful management of distance and trajectory, especially when the wind is up.
The Good
Golfers rave about the sweeping Rocky Mountain vistas throughout the course, as well as the outstanding variety presented by its three distinct nines. Members appreciate the strong sense of community, the active club culture, and consistent course conditions, making it a beloved club experience in Wyoming.
The Not So Good
Some golfers note the wind can make scoring unpredictable, and that the high-altitude terrain can be physically taxing for those walking. Tee time availability can be an issue during peak season due to significant member and guest activity.
