Course Report

At 8,000 yards and over 7,500 feet elevation, the Reserve at Moonlight Basin is one of the longest courses in the world, making even professional events take notice.

About

The Reserve at Moonlight Basin is a Jack Nicklaus Signature mountain course set against the high alpine of Big Sky, Montana. Playing to an astonishing 8,000 yards from the tips and situated at 7,500 feet elevation, it offers dramatic elevation changes and striking views. Opened in 2016, the course is known for its natural setting, strategic design, and secluded private experience.

Caddie Tip

Club up on most holes and pay close attention to elevation changes, especially into greens. The ball will travel farther in the high mountain air, but swirling winds may affect accuracy, so pick conservative lines and avoid missing long on approach shots.

The Main Challenge

The course's greatest challenge lies in managing the dramatic elevation changes, high-altitude ball flights, and strategic bunkering. Wind can swirl unexpectedly, and the layout punishes wild drives with fescue and mature trees. Staying composed and controlling trajectory are key to a good score.

The Good

Golfers are awed by the sheer drama and scale of the course, from elevated tees with endless vistas to the solitude of play in pristine wilderness. The combination of imaginative Nicklaus design and unspoiled scenery makes the course deeply memorable and highly photogenic.

The Not So Good

Players occasionally note the long transitions between holes and significant elevation changes can make the course physically demanding and slow down pace. Walking is essentially impossible, and carts are a necessity.

Signature Hole:

17
