Course Report
Sugarcane’s back nine features several newly created rivers and lakes after its significant 2005 Ray Floyd renovation, distinguishing it from the resort’s other courses and adding memorable risk-reward options.
About
Dorado Beach Sugarcane Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1972 and renovated by Ray Floyd in 2005, offers a challenging layout with large fairways, deep bunkers, and water features especially on the back nine. Part of the TPC Network, the course is celebrated for its scenic beauty and high conditioning within a modern resort setting in Puerto Rico.
Caddie Tip
Precise approach play is crucial, especially on the back nine where deep bunkers guard the greens and water hazards come into play. Favor the wider side of fairways to leave better angles to large, undulating greens. Play conservatively on closing holes if chasing a good score.
The Main Challenge
The toughest stretch is the back nine, with tight approaches, deep bunkers, and water hazards forcing strategic play. The finishing holes, framed by lakes and rivers, can decide any match with their risk-reward demands.
The Good
Golfers love Sugarcane’s mix of wide landing areas and strategic demands, notably the memorable water-laden finishing stretch. The Ray Floyd renovation breathed new life into several holes, keeping the layout fresh even for repeat visitors.
The Not So Good
Some guests note slow pace of play during busy times and a desire for more signage to aid navigation between holes. Others wish for faster greens to match tournament speeds and better drainage after heavy rain.
