Course Report

TPC Potomac underwent a $20 million renovation in 2008, transforming it into one of the region's most challenging and scenic layouts, and it has hosted PGA TOUR events such as the Quicken Loans National and the Wells Fargo Championship.

About

TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm is a championship 18-hole course in Potomac, Maryland, originally opened in 1986 and completely redesigned in 2008 by PGA TOUR Design Services, Tom Fazio, and Pete Dye. Known for its Bentgrass surfaces, strategic bunkering, and the Rock Run Stream Valley, it has hosted multiple PGA TOUR events and delivers top-tier conditioning and amenities.

Caddie Tip

Trust your caddie’s guidance, especially on putts; the greens are quick and subtly contoured. On holes bordered by Rock Run Stream, conservative play is often rewarded. The closing stretch is demanding—play for position off tricky tee shots, and don’t underestimate runouts into fairway bunkers.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at TPC Potomac is its combination of narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and the ever-present Rock Run Stream that guards several holes on the back nine. The par 4s are especially stout, demanding accuracy and thoughtful course management throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers rave about the challenging back nine, especially the natural beauty and risk-reward holes shaped by Rock Run Stream. The tournament-level conditions, smooth Bentgrass greens, and the tranquil setting make the course a highlight for members and tour professionals alike.

The Not So Good

Some players feel the toughness of the layout can be penal for higher-handicap golfers, particularly with the number of forced carries and unforgiving rough. During peak tournament preparations, fairways and rough can be especially narrow and difficult.

The hole's natural setting and challenge have made it a memorable test for professionals.

Clubhouse

A 35,000 sq ft clubhouse offers fine and casual dining, full-service golf shop, modern locker rooms, private event and meeting spaces. The upscale amenities, member services, and refined atmosphere contribute to a premium private club experience.
