Course Report

Hole 3 was personally selected by Robert Trent Jones Sr. for his ideal 'dream 18' and the course ranks among the Top 10 in Continental Europe.

About

Troia Golf Championship Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1980, is one of the most acclaimed layouts in Portugal and Europe. Nestled between the Sado Estuary and Arrábida mountains, it features 18 holes of scenic links-style golf, famed for challenging narrow fairways and small greens set among dunes and pine forest, providing breathtaking ocean views.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy off the tee is critical; the course features narrow fairways, small well-protected greens, and abundant sand. Consider conservative strategies on approach shots and be wary of the wind near seaside holes. Club selection is key on elevated greens such as the 18th. Use practice facilities before play to get a feel for conditions.

The Main Challenge

The course’s defining challenge is its extensive sand dunes and bunkers framing nearly every hole. The greens are small and highly defended, demanding precision on approaches. Wind from the Atlantic can dramatically affect ball flight, increasing difficulty especially on seas-side holes and the par 5 finishing stretch.

The Good

Golfers praise the stunning setting, which combines sweeping views of the Atlantic, natural sand dunes, and pine forest landscapes. The memorable design by Robert Trent Jones Sr. makes every round engaging, with a blend of challenging and picturesque holes, especially its famous par 4 third. The course tests all skill levels while capturing the spirit of classic European links golf.

The Not So Good

The primary complaint relates to the consistently tough layout. Beginners and higher handicap players often find the narrow fairways and small greens exceptionally demanding. Wind conditions can add challenge, and occasional bunker maintenance is suggested to keep standards uniformly high across the entire course.
