Course Report

Red Tiger was named by entertainer Jackie Gleason and uniquely features two island greens, making it distinct among Miami’s layouts.

About

The Red Tiger at Trump National Doral is a renovated 18-hole, par-72 course, co-designed by Robert von Hagge and redesigned by Gil Hanse. Set on 120 acres, it weaves New England-style routing with South Florida flair, features 14 water holes, and offers a strategic, shotmakers’ test, while maintaining playability for all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy off the tee is more important than distance throughout the round due to the numerous water hazards and well-protected greens. Play conservatively into doglegs and favor the safer side away from water—especially on approach shots to island greens. Take note of complex green contours and adjust putting pace accordingly.

The Main Challenge

The primary challenge comes from 14 water holes and several forced carries, notably to the two island greens, requiring precise tee shots and approaches. Greens are moderately contoured and well-bunkered, demanding shotmaking and thoughtful course management throughout.

The Good

Golfers love the compact, strategic layout featuring 14 water holes, excellent greens, and the memorable challenge from unique holes like the two island greens. The blend of old-world design and South Florida landscaping creates an experience that is visually engaging and never monotonous, standing out among Florida resort courses.

The Not So Good

Players sometimes note that the pace of play can slow during peak resort occupancy, and that the flat property limits long views or outstanding scenery. Occasional waterlogging and humid conditions typical to South Florida may affect playability in the rainy season.
