Course Report
Wanumetonomy offers a view of the ocean from every hole, making it one of only a select few courses in the U.S. with such an uninterrupted panoramic coastal experience.
About
Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club, founded in 1922 and designed by noted architect Seth Raynor, is a private, picturesque par-70 course on Aquidneck Island just outside Newport, Rhode Island. Featuring the 'sea coast' style with open layouts and few trees, this historic course offers dramatic bay vistas and has remained true to Raynor's vision through several careful restorations.
Caddie Tip
The strong winds off Narragansett Bay play a major role here—club up on exposed holes, especially along the back nine, and pay close attention to pin positions, as Raynor's greens are subtly contoured and well-guarded. Play conservative lines off the tee to avoid deep fairway bunkers.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect of Wanumetonomy is contending with gusty winds off Narragansett Bay, which frequently affect club selection and shot trajectory. The greens, many of which are original Raynor designs, are well-protected by steep slopes and classic bunkering, demanding precise approaches and creative recovery shots.
The Good
Golfers love the setting, with panoramic ocean views from every hole, giving each round a special sense of place. The classic Seth Raynor design features creative green complexes and strategic bunkering, delivering an engaging test while maintaining strong ties to its architectural heritage and links-style inspirations.
The Not So Good
Some members note that continued investment in practice facilities and modern clubhouse amenities would enhance the overall experience. The wind, though part of the challenge, can sometimes make rounds unpredictable, and drainage in certain low-lying areas can cause occasional soggy conditions after heavy rain.
