Course Report

The name 'Wee Burn' was suggested by Andrew Carnegie to honor the Scottish term for a small brook, referencing the stream winding through the property.

About

Wee Burn Country Club, established in 1896 and redesigned by Devereux Emmet, is one of Connecticut’s oldest private clubs. The parkland layout features pristine fairways, fast greens, and strategic bunkering. Recent renovations by Tom Fazio enhanced classic features and improved playability. The layout winds around the stream named by Andrew Carnegie, offering a storied, challenging round for its members.

Caddie Tip

Several holes are bordered by water hazards and play can be affected by subtle elevation changes. Position off the tee is crucial—avoid aggressive lines unless you’re confident. The course rewards accuracy over distance, and reading the fast, contoured greens closely is key to scoring well.

The Main Challenge

The most challenging aspect is navigating the tight landing areas and approach shots over water, especially with fast, undulating greens. Course management is essential—big numbers are easy if you misjudge position off the tee or approach, particularly when wind picks up or following rain.

The Good

Members love the picturesque, quiet atmosphere and classic design that balances challenge and fairness. The Fazio revisions opened the course and improved vistas, letting the routing and strategic features shine. Excellent conditioning and the traditional club experience are often called the best parts of playing here.

The Not So Good

Some members note that the club's exclusivity and strict policies make access and guest play difficult. Others would like more modernization in practice areas or additional flexibility in tee setup. It remains a classic, so don’t expect radical architectural changes or a relaxed vibe.
