Course Report

Wild Horse was funded by the local community through shares and land sales; the architects once helped build the nearby Sand Hills Golf Club.

About

Wild Horse Golf Club, designed by Dan Proctor and Dan Axland in 1999, is a celebrated minimalist course in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Set at the southern edge of the Sandhills, this public layout is renowned for its firm, sandy turf, linksy bunkering, fun playability, and affordability. Wild Horse is regularly ranked among the top value golf courses in the United States.

Caddie Tip

Embrace creative shot-making—use the firm, rolling fairways for low runners and take advantage of the wide landing areas. Account for frequent strong prairie winds; keeping your ball flight under control is key to scoring well at Wild Horse.

The Main Challenge

Strong prairie winds are the course’s biggest defense, making shot selection crucial—especially into the prevailing gusts. Strategic bunkering and firm, sloping greens reward placement and punish over-aggression. Though generous off the tee, the greens and surrounds present plenty of subtle challenges.

The Good

Golfers rave about Wild Horse's natural, sand-based setting and minimalist design. The rolling fairways, wide corridors, linksy bunkering, and fast greens make every round strategic and enjoyable. Many love how the course prioritizes playability and fun over forced carries or punishing rough.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for a more robust clubhouse or expanded food and beverage options. Others note that the exposed layout means wind can make scoring especially tough on gusty days, with few trees to shield errant shots.
