Course Report

Wintonbury Hills is the only Pete Dye-designed municipal golf course in New England, giving public golfers a rare chance to experience a world-class architect’s signature style at an accessible venue.

About

Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield, Connecticut, is Pete Dye's first New England design. Opened in 2005 and regarded as one of the best municipal courses in New England, it features a harmonious blend of open links-style and classic parkland holes routed beside a reservoir and woodlands. With a par of 70 and stretching 6,711 yards from the tips, it showcases Dye's trademark strategy and playability for all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Focus on accuracy over distance, especially on tee shots, as the blend of open and tree-lined holes makes positioning key. Pay close attention to approach shots on holes bordering the reservoir, where mishits can quickly lead to lost balls. Watch green contours closely; Dye’s putting surfaces reward precise reads.

The Main Challenge

The layout’s greatest challenge lies in its variety. The blend of open, windy stretches and tighter, tree-lined holes demands versatility. The par-3s are especially strong, while water hazards and Dye’s famous railroad ties create visual intimidation and test decision making, especially on the finishing stretch.

The Good

Golfers regularly praise the excellent course conditions and standout value. The Pete Dye design gives each hole character and variety, with strategic bunkering, water hazards, and a peaceful, natural setting that makes for both an enjoyable and memorable round.

The Not So Good

Some players note that pace of play can slow on busy weekends, and drainage can be an issue after sustained rain. Others wish for more robust clubhouse amenities and expanded practice facilities, as the focus remains primarily on the golf experience itself.

Signature Hole:

#

14

No items found.

The signature hole is the 14th, a 455-yard par 4 that plays along the town’s water retention reservoir. The hole demands a precise tee shot and presents a challenging approach into a green bordered by water on the left, making it both visually striking and strategically demanding.

Clubhouse

No items found.

A modern clubhouse features a pro shop, locker rooms, and a small grill/restaurant with a patio overlooking the course. Event space is available for tournaments and outings, but amenities are modest, focusing on functionality for golfers.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Offers a driving range, practice greens for putting and chipping, and warm-up areas. Facilities are well maintained but limited in size, best suited for pre-round preparation rather than extended practice sessions.
