Course Report

The course is routed across land where the 1778 Battle of Rhode Island took place, and several holes are named to commemorate events from this Revolutionary War skirmish.

About

Aquidneck Club is a private 18-hole, par 71 course in coastal Rhode Island, designed by Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie. Routed across historic wetlands, the course showcases a Scottish links-style layout with bentgrass throughout, subtle bunkering, and picturesque Narragansett Bay views. The club is celebrated for its member-focused atmosphere, playability, and first-class amenities.

Caddie Tip

Pay special attention to the wind off Narragansett Bay, which can dramatically affect club selection. On approach shots, aim for the safe sides of the large, subtly contoured greens, as runoffs and collection areas can turn pars into bogeys quickly. Use the all-grass practice area to fine-tune distances before your round.

The Main Challenge

The course’s biggest challenge is its ever-changing coastal wind, which influences club selection on almost every hole. Water hazards and wetlands must be avoided off the tee on several holes, and the undulating greens demand precise approach shots and solid putting to score well.

The Good

Golfers most appreciate Aquidneck Club’s sweeping views of Narragansett Bay, the tranquil coastal setting, and the strategic routing that offers both playability and challenge. The wide variety of holes and minimal forced carries create enjoyable rounds, while excellent amenities and attentive staff provide a high-end private club experience.

The Not So Good

Members note occasional slow drainage on some low-lying holes after heavy rain, which can affect turf conditions. Pace of play may vary on peak weekends, and the wind, while a core feature, can make high-handicap rounds frustrating. Some seek more frequent enhancements to clubhouse dining options.

Signature Hole:

16

No items found.

The 16th hole, a par 4 named “Coal Miner’s Way,” is the toughest on the scorecard at 412 yards. It doglegs slightly to a tiered green, which is well protected by a front right sand bunker, demanding precise approach play and strategic tee shot positioning.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse overlooks the bay and offers upscale locker rooms, fine and casual dining venues, a Lifestyle Shop, spa, fitness center, tennis, and access to a marina. Social spaces and event rooms support a vibrant community and a variety of member events throughout the season.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The Aquidneck Club features a comprehensive practice area, including a dual-sided all-grass range, short game and bunker facilities, and a 4,000-square-foot putting green. PGA-certified professionals offer lessons and clinics for all skill levels, and the full-service golf shop provides equipment and apparel.
