Course Report
Barton Hills has hosted the US Women’s Amateur (1998) and US Women’s Mid-Amateur (2008), cementing its reputation as a championship-caliber venue.
About
Barton Hills Country Club is a distinguished private course in Ann Arbor, Michigan, established in 1922 and originally designed by Donald Ross. After decades of changes, the course was restored in 2012 by Ron Prichard to return its classic strategic features and firm, fast-playing conditions. The course has a long-standing reputation and has hosted several USGA events.
Caddie Tip
Stay below the hole on approaches, as the restored Donald Ross green complexes slope away in subtle but challenging ways. Missing in the wrong spot leaves difficult up-and-downs, so aim conservatively, especially when greens are running fast.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge at Barton Hills is navigating firm, undulating greens and sharply placed bunkers. Approach shots require precision, as missing greens brings difficult recoveries from deep rough or sand. Windy days and tough pin placements raise the challenge, especially on long par 4s like the 3rd and 18th.
The Good
Golfers often praise the classic Donald Ross design, particularly after the careful 2012 restoration that revived original contours, native grass areas, and strategic bunkering. The course offers both playability and challenge, with a welcoming club environment and scenery that enhances the experience.
The Not So Good
Barton Hills occasionally receives feedback about pace of play during peak member events and tournament weeks. Some also note that while the routing and greens are excellent, certain holes feel less distinctive due to tree growth or past redesigns. Improved signage and continued tree management would further enhance playability.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th at Barton Hills Country Club is a par 4 stretching to 428 yards, featuring three deep cross bunkers that create a visually intimidating tee shot. Golfers must challenge these hazards to find the ideal angle for their approach, making for a memorable and strategic finish to the round.
Clubhouse
The full-service clubhouse features elegant dining, bar and lounge areas, locker rooms, banquet and event spaces, as well as pool and tennis facilities. Family activities and social gatherings are central to the club lifestyle, offering more than just golf to all members.
Practice Facilities
Members enjoy a well-maintained driving range, extensive short-game areas with pitching and chipping greens, and a large putting green. Onsite instruction is available from PGA professionals, and modern amenities ensure convenient and complete practice opportunities before every round.
