Course Report
Black Bull’s unique 19-hole routing provides a “bye” hole for settling bets before finishing at the clubhouse.
About
Black Bull Golf Club in Bozeman, Montana is a private Tom Weiskopf design offering dramatic Gallatin Valley mountain vistas. Opened in 2008, its modified links layout blends native landscaping with large strategic bunkers and water features. Members enjoy a challenging, visually impressive course complemented by a highly rated clubhouse and extensive amenities.
Caddie Tip
Stay focused off the tee—Weiskopf’s bunkers are often in prime landing areas. Lay up smartly when you see water or large hazards. Play for the center of the greens, as swirling Gallatin Valley winds can influence even the best shots. Course management is key to keeping a good score here.
The Main Challenge
Large and deep bunkers, combined with water hazards and ever-present mountain breezes, make accurate club selection essential. Course management is required due to several forced carries and risk-reward shots, particularly on back nine holes where hazards and angled greens test every aspect of a player’s game.
The Good
Golfers rave about the sweeping mountain views and the variety of holes that keep every round fresh—especially the fun mix of risk-reward opportunities. The fast, pure greens and refined Weiskopf design consistently earn praise, while the modern, welcoming clubhouse is a favorite social and après-golf hub for members.
The Not So Good
Some golfers wish for improved consistency in fairway conditions during heavy play periods, as summer dryness and frequent play can cause patchiness. A few mention that pace can be slow during peak member events, and the exclusivity limits outside play opportunities.
Signature Hole:
#
17
Hole 17 is a drivable par 4 and arguably the course’s signature experience. It features a visually striking waste area that must be avoided or carried to reach one of the largest greens on property. The risk-reward design demands both accuracy and creativity, embodying Weiskopf’s philosophy and providing a shot at eagle for the bold.
Clubhouse
The modern, upscale clubhouse includes a restaurant and bar, spacious locker rooms, pro shop, and outdoor patio with mountain views. Additional amenities feature a fitness center, pool, and lounge—all designed for socializing and comfort before or after the round.
Practice Facilities
The club features a full grass driving range, short game area, and putting green, all kept in excellent condition. Onsite teaching professionals provide lessons, and members enjoy access to practice all facets of their game before rounds.
