Course Report

Burning Tree Club is notorious for its strict all-male membership policy and has counted numerous U.S. presidents among its regulars.

About

Burning Tree Club is an exclusive private, all-male golf club designed initially by Charles Hugh Alison of Colt, Mackenzie, and Alison, opening in 1923. The parkland layout features classic lines, mature trees, and renowned Bermuda grass surfaces. Subsequent work included contributions by William S. Flynn, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Arthur Hills, and Rich Mandell, preserving its reputation as a presidential and political getaway.

Caddie Tip

Keep tee shots straight, as tree-lined fairways punish errant drives and leave tough angles on approach. Club selection is key on undulating greens—avoid missing on the wrong side, and always favor positions that leave an uphill or flat putt. The closing stretch is demanding; stay focused and favor the center of greens.

The Main Challenge

Precision off the tee is essential, as the tree-lined layout severely penalizes missed fairways. Approaches to firm, sloping Bermuda greens place a premium on both distance control and shot planning. The finishing stretch, especially the last three holes, is known to challenge even experienced golfers with subtle angles and elevation changes.

The Good

Members deeply value the club’s privacy, tranquil surroundings, and classic design. The seclusion from city noise, immaculate presentation of the tree-lined layout, and sense of history are particularly praised. The course offers a blend of strategy and challenge without feeling punitive, making every round rewarding for skilled players.

The Not So Good

Critiques occasionally point to a conservative approach to modernization. While the original routing is revered, some wish for a few more dramatic holes or updated facilities. The exclusive atmosphere, while attractive for some, can be limiting in terms of broader community engagement.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The 18th is a 418-yard par 4 finishing hole. Players must clear a direct forced carry from the tee to reach a fairway that climbs uphill to a large, well-contoured green. With the clubhouse as a backdrop, precision and strategy are emphasized. A single bunker on the left and ample room right and behind the green challenge approach shots and club selection.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse is traditional and refined, with private dining, bar, and banquet spaces. Locker rooms are spacious, service is attentive, and small pro shop retail is available. The atmosphere is understated but consistently elegant, with an emphasis on member comfort.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Burning Tree offers a classic range directly behind the clubhouse, complemented by an expansive short game area and a separate putting green. Facilities are well-maintained and geared towards serious practice, with access to experienced teaching professionals.
