Course Report
Ambiente replaced the former Indian Bend course, dramatically reducing turfgrass for sustainability and introducing 100 acres of native desert and wildflower areas.
About
Camelback Golf Club's Ambiente Course is a 7,225-yard, par 72 desert-inspired layout designed by Jason Straka of Hurdzan Fry. Opened in 2013, it features rolling fairways, elevation changes, native grasses, and a blend of desert and meadow aesthetics. The course challenges golfers of all abilities and is part of the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa.
Caddie Tip
Accuracy off the tee is critical—many fairways are lined with native grasses and environmentally sensitive areas. Avoid aggressive play when unsure of yardages. Firm greens demand thoughtful shot selection and a deft touch with your putter, especially on downhill putts. Missing in the right spot is often better than attacking every pin.
The Main Challenge
Ambiente’s biggest challenge is its strategic use of native areas and elevation changes. Many holes punish errant drives with environmentally sensitive rough, requiring careful club selection and disciplined shot-making. The firm, undulating greens place a premium on approach accuracy and finesse with the short game.
The Good
Golfers love Ambiente’s dramatic scenery, highlighted by mountain views and native grass rough that provides a unique desert-meets-meadow feel. The routing offers memorable elevation changes, strong variety, and a rewarding test for all skill levels. Its challenge and playability draw guests from across the country.
The Not So Good
Conditions can be inconsistent, especially during overseed transitions or extreme heat, with some fairways and greens struggling to maintain uniform coverage. Some players express frustration with patchy turf and thin lies in the summer months. Improved agronomic practices and more consistent maintenance could elevate the experience.
Signature Hole:
#
9
The par 4 9th hole is regularly celebrated for its striking water feature and risk-reward tee shot. Voted one of the best water holes in Arizona, it requires a precise drive and approach over water to a well-protected green, making club selection and accuracy essential.
Clubhouse
The 36,000-square-foot clubhouse features a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, and multiple dining options, including Tavern 37 with deck seating and expansive course views. Locker rooms, event spaces, and attentive service cater to both resort guests and golfers. Shuttle service is available to the JW Marriott.
Practice Facilities
Ambiente offers a natural grass driving range, short game area with sand bunkers, and a large putting green. Golfers can access the on-site Camelback Golf Academy for lessons and clinics. The facilities are well maintained and accommodate all skill levels seeking to practice before or after their round.
