Course Report
Canyon River Golf Club was named the #9 new golf course in the nation by Golf Magazine in 2007 and the #1 course in Montana in 2008.
About
Canyon River Golf Club is an 18-hole public course in Missoula, Montana, designed by acclaimed architects Schmidt Curley and opened in 2006. The layout features wide fairways, native grasslands, and a blend of mountain and river views. Water hazards and marshes come into play on several holes, creating a scenic yet challenging experience enjoyed by all skill levels.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee on the front nine, as native grass and water hazards can penalize errant drives. Pay attention to changing wind patterns, especially on the back nine. Club selection is critical on the par 3s, with subtle green contours that reward precise approach shots and careful putting.
The Main Challenge
The toughest challenge at Canyon River is navigating the water hazards and marshes that threaten on numerous holes, especially during swirling mountain winds. Strategic course management is rewarded, as aggressive lines can lead to big numbers. Accurate iron play to large greens with subtle breaks is critical for scoring.
The Good
Golfers love the blend of playable yet challenging holes set among stunning Rocky Mountain scenery, with thoughtful use of natural marshlands and streams adding both beauty and strategy. The course receives praise for its friendly atmosphere and consistent, reliable conditions throughout the playing season.
The Not So Good
Some players comment on unpredictable wind and occasional pace-of-play slowdowns during peak times. The most frequent request is for continued enhancement of rough and native areas to minimize lost ball searches and improve overall flow for higher-handicap golfers.
Signature Hole:
#
14
The par 3 14th hole at Canyon River Golf Club is widely regarded as the signature hole, featuring a dramatic tee shot over water to a well-guarded green framed by the Rocky Mountains. Strategic bunkering and swirling winds create a memorable test of precision and nerve for golfers at any level.
Clubhouse
Expect a well-appointed clubhouse with a pro shop, casual grill and bar, event space, locker rooms, and a comfortable patio overlooking the closing holes. The facility is modern and caters to both members and public guests, with attentive staff and regular member and community events.
Practice Facilities
Canyon River offers a full-featured practice range, putting green, and short game area with bunkers. Instruction from teaching professionals is available, and the range provides ample targets and quality turf for effective practice sessions year-round within the course season.
