Course Report

Chambers Bay is one of the few true links-style courses in the United States and was built on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry.

About

Chambers Bay is a world-renowned public links-style course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., carved out of a former sand and gravel quarry on Puget Sound. Featuring expansive fescue fairways, towering dunes, and striking sea views, it hosted the 2015 U.S. Open and 2010 U.S. Amateur, providing a rugged challenge in a spectacular Pacific Northwest setting.

Caddie Tip

Trust the yardage and allow for firm fairway roll—shots play shorter than their number, especially downwind. The course rewards imagination and low running shots, but be wary of the massive green contours; staying below the hole is critical for manageable putts.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at Chambers Bay is handling the firm, bouncy turf and large, multi-tiered greens, which can deflect balls far from pins. High winds, deep fescue rough, and dramatic elevation changes combine for a test that punishes approach mistakes and requires strategic thinking on nearly every shot.

The Good

Golfers rave about the sweeping Puget Sound vistas and the authentic links feel, which is rare for American courses. The layout offers creative shot options, massive undulating greens, and a thrilling sense of scale that makes each round feel like a journey through coastal dunes.

The Not So Good

Players often comment on the difficulty of the walk due to steep undulations and soft sand surfaces, and the greens can sometimes be uneven, especially after heavy play or wet weather. The course can also play painfully slow during peak periods as its challenge and walk combine for extended rounds.

Signature Hole:

#

15

Hole 15 at Chambers Bay, called "Lone Fir," is a dramatic downhill par 3 with breathtaking views of Puget Sound. The elevated tee plays to a large, undulating green protected by deep bunkers, while the iconic lone fir tree stands sentinel behind the green. This postcard-perfect hole is both visually stunning and a true test of precision, especially when the wind is up.

Clubhouse

The modern clubhouse offers panoramic views of the course and Sound, a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, a grill restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, and event spaces for groups. The facility is welcoming for everyday golfers and championship events alike.
