Course Report

Durban Country Club is the only course in Africa to have been ranked in the world’s Top 100 by Golf Magazine USA and has hosted the South African Open more than any other venue.

About

Durban Country Club is a historic championship links course designed in 1922, famed for its rolling coastal sand dunes and lush vegetation. The course has hosted multiple South African Opens, features undulating fairways, and panoramic views over the Indian Ocean. Major architects, including George Waterman and Laurie Waters, contributed to its enduring design legacy.

Caddie Tip

Play the opening stretch cautiously; the first five holes are among the toughest, with narrow fairways and punishing coastal bush left and OB right. Pay close attention to the breeze—club selection changes rapidly as the wind changes direction along the ocean. Use local knowledge to approach the undulating greens and avoid short-siding yourself.

The Main Challenge

The wind is often the main defense, especially across the tight, undulating opening stretch and dunes holes. Errant drives are heavily penalized by thick coastal bush, and shots into exposed greens require careful club selection. The closing stretch, including the par-4 18th, tests shotmaking under pressure.

The Good

Golfers rave about the character of the dunesland holes—particularly the wild contours, natural beauty, and ever-present ocean views. The undulating fairways and strategic bunkering create a memorable experience and the storied history adds a special gravitas. The links-style setup is unlike anything else on the continent.

The Not So Good

Many suggest the flat holes further from the coast lack the architectural drama of the dunesland stretch. Historically, the greens and conditioning were inconsistent, but recent renovations have resolved most issues. Some golfers cite busy member play and slow pace on weekends, especially after major events.

#

18

No items found.

The 18th at Durban Country Club is a par 4 finish that sweeps back toward the iconic clubhouse, often played into a prevailing coastal wind. A realigned green, deep greenside bunker, and the need for two precise shots make this dramatic closer memorable for its visual grandeur and strategic challenge.

Clubhouse

The stately clubhouse features multiple dining options, locker rooms, event spaces, and a pro shop. There are excellent hospitality services, patio spaces with ocean views, and access to a variety of social amenities and member events throughout the year.
