Course Report
Erinvale hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf and the South African Airways Open in 2003 and 2004, placing it among the country's leading championship venues.
About
Erinvale Golf Club is a Gary Player-designed 18-hole parkland course in Somerset West, Western Cape, South Africa. Noted for its variety and strategic layout, the course offers stunning mountain and wineland vistas, championship-standard facilities, and excellent year-round conditions. Its combination of scenic beauty and strong design has made it a frequent tournament venue.
Caddie Tip
The front nine is flatter and features several water hazards, so favor safe lines over aggressive shots. On the back nine, be prepared for tougher uphill walks and sidehill lies. Keep tee shots left on the closing stretch, especially on holes bordering the nature reserve.
The Main Challenge
Erinvale's greatest challenge comes from its back nine, where elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and sloping fairways place a premium on positional play. The wind often picks up in the afternoon, requiring thoughtful club selection, especially on longer approach shots to raised greens.
The Good
Golfers praise Erinvale for its spectacular mountain and vineyard scenery, well-kept fairways and greens, and the memorable variety between the flat front and undulating back nines. The combination of excellent conditioning and striking vistas makes it a favorite for locals and international guests.
The Not So Good
Some visitors note that the back nine can feel physically demanding to walk due to the slopes, and that non-member visitors may find the pace of play a bit slow on busier days. Professional events can sometimes limit public access during preparation periods.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The par-4 17th is widely regarded as Erinvale's signature hole, featuring a daunting tee shot over a ridge with a nature reserve to the right. Its elevated tee and panoramic views of the Helderberg makes it a memorable challenge, requiring accuracy due to natural hazards and dramatic elevation changes.
Clubhouse
The modern clubhouse features a restaurant with indoor and terrace seating, a pro shop, bar, locker rooms, and excellent catering. Members and visitors enjoy top-quality service, with mountain views and sunset drinks regularly highlighted by guests.
Practice Facilities
The club provides a full-length driving range with complimentary balls, two putting greens, a short game area with bunkers, and professional instruction from PGA-qualified staff. The facilities are spacious, modern, and kept to high standards.
