Course Report
Firethorn’s stretch of holes 11 through 14 was personally praised by Pete Dye as among his favorite sequences that he’s ever designed in his storied career.
About
Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska is a premier private club established in 1986 and designed by Pete Dye, Perry Dye, and Alice Dye. Known for its challenging layout and immaculate conditions, this tree-lined, parkland-style course stretches over 7,100 yards. Firethorn is recognized for its demanding four-hole stretch on the back nine and is a favorite among Nebraska’s top private clubs.
Caddie Tip
Focus on positioning off the tee rather than just distance. Many holes feature cunning doglegs, and the bentgrass greens are firm and fast. Stay below the hole when aiming for approach shots, especially on the back nine where short-sided misses can quickly rack up strokes.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge at Firethorn is its punishing back nine, where precise driving and smart course management are required to navigate the stretch of water-lined and bunkered holes. The elevated greens and demanding par 4s test approach play and creativity with short game shots.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise Firethorn for its challenging and memorable layout, especially the stretch from holes 11 to 14. The rolling terrain, strong risk-reward opportunities, and Dyes’ signature design touches make it an exciting test for all playing abilities. Members love the top-tier conditioning and consistently smooth greens.
The Not So Good
Some golfers feel that the difficulty can be excessive for higher handicappers, especially from the back tees. Others mention that access is limited due to its private status, and the course’s water hazards and bunkering can be penal for less accurate players.
Signature Hole:
#
13
Hole 13 at Firethorn Golf Club is a par 4 that stands out for its dramatic layout and natural beauty. The hole demands an accurate tee shot to a narrow fairway bordered by native grasses, before a precise approach to a well-protected Bentgrass green. The strategic bunkering and water hazards create a memorable and challenging experience for all golfers.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features upscale locker rooms, a full-service restaurant and bar, private dining areas, event spaces, and a pro shop stocked with premium equipment and apparel. Additional amenities include patio dining with course views and member-focused recreational facilities.
Practice Facilities
Firethorn offers a comprehensive practice area including a full-length driving range, dedicated pitching and chipping greens, and a large putting green. Instruction is available from teaching professionals, and there is also a short game area for bunker and finesse practice.
