Course Report

The Loop is the first and only truly reversible 18-hole course in America, playing as either the Red or Black layout on alternating days, providing two different course experiences for visitors.

About

The Loop - Black at Forest Dunes Golf Club is a Tom Doak design and one of the world's only fully reversible 18-hole courses. Featuring a clockwise routing, it offers a walking-focused, links-inspired experience in northern Michigan. The course is renowned for strategic options, minimalist design, and fun, firm playing conditions, attracting aficionados seeking something truly unique.

Caddie Tip

Embrace the ground game and keep shots low and running, especially given the firm conditions typical at The Loop. The best routes to the green aren't always direct, so plan for subtle bounces and side slopes—look for safe landing areas away from bunkers and aim to keep approaches below the hole.

The Main Challenge

The firm, fast fescue turf, subtle greens, and open site place emphasis on smart strategy rather than brute power. Many greens are best accessed through the air or along the ground depending on wind and pin. With minimal tree protection, wind plays a role, and the bunkers are deep enough to challenge recovery from misses.

The Good

Golfers most love the reversible design and minimalist strategy, making every round feel fresh and distinctive. The Tom Doak architecture encourages creativity, while the routing on sandy, firm turf delivers pure golf and a memorable, fun day. Walking the course, the variety between the Black and Red layouts is an experience found almost nowhere else.

The Not So Good

Some visitors note the turf can be firm to the point of difficult in drought periods, and others desire more off-course amenities or enhanced signage, as the routing can confuse first-time players. Play pace may slow when groups are unfamiliar with the concept, and some wish for more variety in food or beverage options.
