Course Report

The Banks Course is one of the few in America that incorporates multiple Macdonald/Raynor/Banks template holes, making it an architectural treasure for golf history enthusiasts.

About

Forsgate Country Club’s Banks Course, designed by Charles Banks in 1931, is a renowned private, parkland-style layout in Monroe Township, New Jersey. The course features Banks’ signature bold bunkering and template holes modeled after classic Scottish and English designs. Highly ranked among New Jersey courses, it is known for challenging play, strategic interest, and meticulous conditioning for members and their guests.

Caddie Tip

Pay attention to green contours on approach shots, especially on template holes. Greens are heavily protected by bunkers and their undulations require accurate ball placement and deft short-game touch. Keep the ball below the hole whenever possible to avoid the most severe putts.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at Forsgate Banks comes from its imposing bunkering and the complex, undulating greens. Controlling approach distance and spin is essential, as missed greens can lead to difficult recoveries. Reading subtle green breaks and coping with fast putting surfaces test all skill levels.

The Good

Golfers admire the Banks Course for its fascinating template holes and architecturally significant design, providing a level of variety and strategic play not typically seen outside the most revered US courses. Signature features like the deep bunkering, bold green complexes, and classic routing create a memorable round.

The Not So Good

Some members have commented on the course’s susceptibility to wetness in early spring or after heavy rain, which can affect playability and turf firmness. While conditioning overall is strong, improvement in drainage or fairway firmness would make for an even more consistent year-round experience.

The par 3 12th, known as the Horseshoe, is surrounded by vast bunkers and features unique, horseshoe-shaped undulations on the green, reminiscent of classic Scottish short holes. The putting surface presents significant challenge due to buried 'elephants' and dramatic contours, creating a memorable test of skill and touch.

Clubhouse

The historic clubhouse offers member dining, grill/banquet rooms, locker rooms, a pro shop, fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Member social events and casual spaces promote community; service is attentive, with valet and club storage available.
