Course Report
The signature 12th hole, 'Sky Hi,' features a 200-foot drop and is often cited as one of the most dramatic par 3s in America, attracting golfers seeking both challenge and scenic thrills.
About
Gatlinburg Golf Course, designed by William B. Langford and renovated by Bob Cupp & Associates, is an 18-hole public course known for its dramatic elevation changes and outstanding Smoky Mountain scenery. With Bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways, it offers a challenging mountain golf experience just outside Gatlinburg. This course blends strategic design with memorable vistas.
Caddie Tip
Distance control is critical at Gatlinburg, especially with the dramatic elevation changes on the back nine. Use at least one to two clubs less on downhill holes like 12, and play conservatively off tight, sidehill fairways to stay in play. The undulating greens reward a careful read.
The Main Challenge
The back nine's tight, tree-lined fairways and major elevation shifts require accurate club selection and shot control. Holes like the par 3 12th and lengthy 17th present unique tests, while shifting mountain winds can turn a seemingly straightforward approach into a demanding shot.
The Good
Golfers love the stunning mountain scenery, particularly the elevation changes and panoramic views on the back nine. The 12th hole's famed 200-foot drop is a main attraction. The course provides a fun and memorable mountain golf experience not found elsewhere in Tennessee.
The Not So Good
Players often note that the course lacks a driving range for full warm-up, and busy periods can lead to slow play on weekends. The mountainous terrain means that some cart paths are steep or bumpy, which can be challenging for some visitors.
Signature Hole:
#
12
The par 3 12th hole, named "Sky Hi," features a spectacular 200-foot drop from tee to green over 194 yards. One of the most dramatic holes in the country, this shot demands precision and nerve, as towering elevation exposes tee shots to the wind and unforgettable views of the Smoky Mountains.
Clubhouse
Expect a fully stocked pro shop, snack bar, and locker rooms. The staff is noted for their friendliness and efficiency. While not luxurious, the clubhouse provides comfort and all the basic services for an enjoyable golfing experience.
Practice Facilities
The course offers a short game and putting practice area but does not have a full driving range. Facilities include a modern pro shop, dedicated practice green, and chipping area, suitable for warming up before your round and working on your short game.
