Course Report
During the RBC Canadian Open, the 14th hole is converted into 'The Rink,' wrapped with hockey boards and filled with crowd energy, celebrating Canada’s hockey and golf cultures together.
About
Hamilton Golf & Country Club, designed primarily by Harry S. Colt and opened in 1916, is regarded as one of Canada’s premier courses. Routed over rolling, wooded terrain, it combines immaculate conditioning with strategic interest and classic parkland style. The club regularly hosts the RBC Canadian Open, and underwent a major renovation led by Martin Ebert in 2019.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to elevation changes, especially on the hilly West nine. Approach shots are frequently affected by swirling winds. On the par-4 finishing holes, favor accuracy off the tee—bunkers and mature trees punish missed fairways, and greenside slopes demand careful distance control.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge lies in controlling ball flight on the undulating fairways and navigating the deep, restored bunkers. The finishing stretch from holes 14 to 18 tests both nerves and strategy, with elevated greens and swirling winds on the exposed property requiring precise approach shots.
The Good
Golfers rave about the routing’s variety, especially the thrilling back nine and the unique, tournament-inspired atmosphere on the 14th. The club’s heritage, classic Colt architecture, and impeccable maintenance make it a perennial favorite among members, visiting pros, and industry experts.
The Not So Good
Many golfers point to the restrictive private access and occasional slow play during member competitions. Some feel that despite tree removal, certain areas can still feel tight off the tee, and demand for tee times peaks around major events, limiting member access.
Signature Hole:
#
14
The par-3 14th hole, famously nicknamed 'The Rink,' features a dramatic hockey-themed atmosphere during tournaments, complete with boards and organ music. Measuring 212 yards, it challenges players with a treacherous green complex, deep bunkers, and visual intimidation from tournament features.
Clubhouse
The historic clubhouse features high-end dining, locker rooms, lounges, meeting spaces, and event services. Members benefit from attentive staff, private patios, and panoramic course views, making the club among the most celebrated in Canada.
Practice Facilities
Hamilton offers a newly renovated driving range, short-game area with bunkers, extensive putting green, and a dedicated teaching staff. Facilities are maintained to high standards, accommodating members for both casual practice and tournament preparation.
