Course Report
Hamilton Island Golf Club is the only championship course in Australia built entirely on its own island, requiring golfers to arrive via ferry from Hamilton Island.
About
Hamilton Island Golf Club, designed by Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett, is the only 18-hole championship course in Australia set entirely on its own island. Opened in 2009, it winds over Dent Island’s rugged ridges and valleys, presenting challenging holes and panoramic Whitsunday views. The course integrates seamlessly with its natural tropical setting and offers resort-exclusive access.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to the wind and elevation changes throughout your round—club selection can shift by several clubs from one hole to the next. The fairways are generous but landing areas can be deceptive in crosswinds, especially on the ridgeline holes. On the 14th, always aim for the center and trust your yardage; trouble lurks everywhere else.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge comes from the relentless wind and the course’s dramatic elevation changes. Narrow fairways snaking along ridges demand both accuracy and bravery, while thick bushland punishes any errant shot off the tee. The par-3s play especially difficult when exposed to crosswinds, creating a stern test even from the forward tees.
The Good
Golfers rave about the dramatic ocean vistas from nearly every hole and the authentic sense of isolation and serenity found on Dent Island. The routing ingeniously follows the natural contours, providing unmatched panoramic views of the Whitsundays and the Coral Sea. The memorable setting and challenging layout make each visit a true golf experience.
The Not So Good
Golfers frequently cite the sometimes unpredictable greens and tough wind conditions as points for improvement. The course’s steep slopes can cause tiring cart rides and make walking nearly impossible. Some guests wish for more variety or updates to practice facilities, while others mention occasional pace-of-play slowdowns during busy resort periods.
Signature Hole:
#
14
The 14th hole, a par 3 known as the 'Valley of Death,' plays to an elevated green surrounded on three sides by bunkers. Wind and swirling breezes make club selection critical, and shots landing right or short rarely survive. The bold, scenic approach, coupled with panoramic Coral Sea views, make this one of the most memorable short holes in Australia.
Clubhouse
Clubhouse amenities include a full restaurant and bar, panoramic deck for post-round dining, locker rooms with showers, a well-equipped pro shop, and on-course refreshment service. The venue also provides event hosting and stunning Whitsunday views from nearly every seat.
Practice Facilities
Includes a modest driving range, short game area, and putting green; range balls and tutoring are available. The contemporary clubhouse features locker rooms, showers, a restaurant and bar with balcony seating overlooking the Coral Sea, and a fully stocked pro shop offering rentals, apparel, and gear.
