Course Report

Haymaker Golf Course is an Audubon International Signature Sanctuary, recognized for environmental sustainability and habitat preservation within its 233-acre footprint.

About

Haymaker Golf Course, designed by Keith Foster and opened in 1997, is a public, links-style layout set in the scenic Yampa Valley of Steamboat Springs. This award-winning 18-hole course spans 233 acres with no residential development, ensuring panoramic views of Mount Werner and the surrounding mountains. The course is known for its challenging layout, environmental accolades, and top-tier playing conditions.

Caddie Tip

Favor the wider landing areas off the tee—many fairways appear generous but are shaped to funnel balls toward native grasses and wetlands. Approach shots require solid yardage control due to variable mountain winds and undulating greens. On the back nine, watch for water hazards and pay close attention to pin positions.

The Main Challenge

Haymaker’s toughest challenge is its combinations of long par 4s, strategic water hazards, and native grass areas. The wind, typical in the open Yampa Valley, frequently shifts, requiring thoughtful club selection. Large greens with subtle undulations can be deceptive, and pin placements add another level of complexity.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise Haymaker for its active wildlife, panoramic Yampa Valley and mountain views, and the complete absence of residential development. The links-style design offers wide fairways, strategic bunkering, and a tranquil atmosphere rarely found in municipal settings, providing a memorable mountain golf experience.

The Not So Good

Some players find the rough and native grasses excessively penal, especially for higher handicaps. Others mention that slow play can occur during peak visitor periods, and that green fees, while fair for the setting, are on the higher end for a municipal course.
