Course Report
Kingsmill's River Course hosted the PGA Tour's Michelob Championship from 1981–2002 and the LPGA Kingsmill Championship for over a decade, making it a rare resort venue with both PGA and LPGA pedigree.
About
Kingsmill Resort's River Course, designed by Pete Dye, is a championship layout along the James River renowned for hosting PGA and LPGA Tour events. The course blends strategic challenge with scenic beauty, offering tree-lined and open parkland holes, undulating terrain, and riverside vistas. It's recognized as one of Virginia's best resort courses and a regional tournament destination.
Caddie Tip
Precision off the tee is key, especially on narrow tree-lined holes. Aim to keep drives in the fairway, as the rough can be thick in the summer. Pay close attention to pin locations, as Pete Dye's greens have subtle slopes. On holes along the river, consider the wind, which often affects club selection, especially on 16–18.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge comes from Pete Dye's strategic bunkering, water hazards near greens, and stretches where tee placement influences every shot. Holes 16–18 require focus and shotmaking under pressure, especially when winds rise off the river. The greens are quick and difficult to hold when firm.
The Good
Golfers rave about the River Course’s final stretch—especially holes 16–18 along the James River—for both their aesthetic appeal and formidable challenge. The course combines tournament pedigree, excellent greens, and diverse, engaging holes, including some of Pete Dye's finest work in the region.
The Not So Good
The resort overall sometimes receives criticism for dated non-golf amenities and slow pace of play during busy times. Some guests note that summer rough can be penal, and greens, though generally fast, may show stress during peak heat. Improved off-course dining and lodging are frequently requested.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The par 3 17th is Kingsmill's standout hole, playing directly along the James River with dramatic water views. Club selection is crucial due to breezes off the river, and the sloping green demands a precise iron shot. The setting and challenge combine for a memorable finishing stretch that has tested the world's best during pro events.
Clubhouse
Full-service clubhouse includes dining, locker rooms, pro shop, and patio seating with river views. Resort guests access a spa, pools, and other recreational options. Service is consistently rated as attentive and professional.
Practice Facilities
Comprehensive facilities include a double-ended driving range, extensive short-game area, and putting greens. The teaching staff receives high marks, and clinics are available. The nearby clubhouse has top-tier locker rooms, a pro shop, and food & beverage options.
