Course Report

Kohanaiki is the only course in Hawaii designed by Rees Jones and offers three comfort stations (hale) including a private brewery, with signature local brews available to members during play.

About

Kohanaiki Golf Club is an exclusive, private Rees Jones design located on 450 acres of the Kona coastline. Opened in 2013, it features six oceanfront holes, lava flows, palm vistas, and immaculately maintained turf. The course integrates Hawaiian history and ocean views for a memorable, world-class golf experience tailored for members.

Caddie Tip

Conservative play pays off on windy days, especially with the exposed oceanfront holes. The large, contoured greens demand careful approach shots and smart lag putting. Watch for grain direction on putts, and use short irons to avoid the lava rock fringes around greens.

The Main Challenge

The challenge at Kohanaiki comes from its blend of ocean winds, tight fairways, and strategic bunkering, especially on the exposed ocean holes. Players must carefully manage risk and reward, especially on the closing stretch where wind and water hazards can force tough decisions under pressure.

The Good

Members rave about the stunning oceanfront holes, the relaxed and luxurious service, and exclusive amenities such as the comfort hales stocked with food and drinks. The integration of natural Hawaiian landscape, including lava flows and historic cultural sites, provides an unforgettable setting and sense of place for every round.

The Not So Good

A few members mention limited availability for guest play, making it hard for friends or family to experience the course. Others wish for a little more variety in on-course food options at the comfort stations, but most agree the amenities already set a high bar.

Signature Hole:

#

18

The 18th is a spectacular par 5 finishing hole playing along the coastline, with sweeping ocean views and lava rock features. Its strategic risk-reward design offers a dramatic finish, as players must decide between laying up or challenging the hazards to reach the green in two. The final approach captures the spirit and setting of Kohanaiki.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The 67,000-square-foot clubhouse features luxury locker rooms, dining, wine and cigar rooms, a private brewery, spa, fitness center, pools, adventure center, and a bowling alley. Multiple lounge and event spaces create a social hub exclusive to members and their guests.
