Course Report
The Sunset course appeared on TV during 'Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf,' featuring a match between Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw soon after it opened.
About
Las Campanas (Sunset) is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course set amid Santa Fe’s high-desert landscape, opened in 2000. Renowned for its out-and-back routing, mountain vistas, and strategic design, this private course features bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens, and is consistently recognized among New Mexico’s top courses by Golf Digest.
Caddie Tip
Be mindful of elevation changes, especially on holes like 7 and 18. The out-and-back routing means wind direction won’t be the same all day. Approach shots must be precise due to well-protected greens and occasional water hazards. Allow for the thin air at altitude, as shots may travel farther than expected.
The Main Challenge
Sunset’s greatest challenge is balancing risk and reward on its many strategically bunkered holes and water-protected greens. The thin mountain air alters club selection, while the out-and-back routing exposes players to shifting winds. Accurate approach shots and smart course management are crucial, especially on the closing stretch.
The Good
Golfers most appreciate the strategic design and stunning mountain vistas throughout the course. The routing provides variety, unique elevation changes, and excellent playing conditions on smooth bentgrass surfaces. Challenging yet fair holes reward smart play, and the privacy and service level at Las Campanas garner high marks.
The Not So Good
Many visitors mention that the out-and-back routing—with no return to the clubhouse after nine holes—can be inconvenient for those wanting a break or playing shorter rounds. Some wish for greater variety in hole layouts on the back nine and for enhanced on-course amenities.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The closing hole, a par 4, is a reverse-mirror image of the 18th on the Sunrise course. Played around a central lake running the length of the fairway, it challenges golfers with water in play both on the drive and approach, demanding accuracy on the final shot to the green.
Clubhouse
The Club boasts elegant locker rooms, a modern fitness and wellness center, fine and casual dining options, a resort-like pool, dedicated tennis and pickleball courts, and a world-class equestrian center. The clubhouse features panoramic views and attentive service reflective of the club’s exclusive atmosphere.
Practice Facilities
Expect a 19-acre practice park featuring a long driving range, expansive putting area, bunker facility, designated chipping greens, and a state-of-the-art indoor Performance Center. PGA-accredited professionals and a fully stocked golf shop enhance the offering.
